Apple Watch Series 12 ships with a new sensing ring, Audio Intelligence, and a readiness score nobody asked for — until now

The Series 12 rearchitects the optical sensor, adds HRV readings every five minutes, and drops an AI audio suite that processes everything on-device. It starts at $399 and preorders are open now.

Here's the thing: Apple Watch updates are usually incremental enough to skip. The Series 12 is not that.

The headline change is the new Health Sensing System — a redesigned ring of photodiodes replacing the four-LED diamond layout on prior models. The larger electrode surface area means more consistent skin contact, and the green LEDs are bigger and more power-efficient. Apple says the result is heart rate measured every five seconds and HRV readings taken up to 24 times more frequently than on previous watches. Apple backs that claim with a study conducted on 'a diverse population of over 1,000 participants,' which it used to assert the Series 12 delivers 'the most accurate heart rate sensing in any wearable.'

That data feeds a new Readiness score — a 0-to-10 daily number that weighs activity, training load, vitals, and sleep. It updates throughout the day. The HRV metric inside the updated heart rate app now refreshes up to every five minutes, compared to every two to four hours on older hardware. Readiness scores are not new to the wearable category, but the underlying sensing frequency is a meaningful step up.

The S11 chip powers a new 'secure exclave' — an on-device processing zone where raw microphone audio is transcribed and interpreted without ever being stored or transmitted. Only the output leaves the exclave. Apple says it is not listening to your conversations. That architecture enables four Audio Intelligence features: improved Shazam detection, Live Rewind (which surfaces the previous 15 seconds of a conversation as a text snippet when you double-press the Digital Crown), and Siri Recap (high-level summaries of conversations for later review).

On materials: the aluminum models are 60 percent tougher than prior aluminum versions, per Apple. There are also titanium finishes and a new optional ceramic finish in midnight blue and pearl white.

The iOS Health app is getting a significant redesign — Apple Intelligence summaries at the top, tiles that reorder by time of day, a new Longevity tab tracking wellbeing across seven areas, and a 'Health Age' score. That update ships later this year and requires a compatible iPhone. Labs integration lets users schedule blood tests covering over 50 biomarkers for $119 at approximately 2,000 Quest Diagnostics locations in the US.

Both the Series 12 and the Ultra 4 are available for preorder today and ship September 18. The Series 12 starts at $399; the Ultra 4 starts at $799.

Voltage's read: Apple is doing what Apple does best — taking features the Android ecosystem shipped first and wrapping them in a hardware and privacy story tight enough to matter. The secure exclave approach to Audio Intelligence is the right architecture for ambient listening on a wrist device: process locally, ship nothing raw. If it holds up to scrutiny, it is a genuine differentiator. The $399 entry price keeps the Series 12 in the same competitive band it has always occupied. The demo is not the product — but the changelog here is longer than usual, and that is worth noting.
