Microsoft is hosting a Windows and Surface event in San Francisco on October 7, with Satya Nadella, Jensen Huang and Pavan Davuluri in the room.

The company says the event will focus on 'Windows, NVIDIA RTX Spark, Surface, and the broader PC ecosystem.' Microsoft is also framing the presentation around 'how local AI will shape the next chapter of the PC.'

That puts NVIDIA's RTX Spark front and center. NVIDIA announced the system-on-a-chip for Windows only a few months ago, and Microsoft appears ready to use the event to fill in more details about the Surface Laptop Ultra, which uses the platform.

Microsoft announced that laptop in June 2026, but it did not share availability details. Other laptop makers have also introduced RTX Spark devices, though their prices still have not been disclosed.

Microsoft and NVIDIA share a broader pitch for the future of computing: AI agents handling an increasing amount of normal computer work. Microsoft has already shown hardware under Project Solara that could fit that story, and the company says the new event is a chance to show the latest innovations across Windows, RTX Spark and Surface.

Here's the thing: the pitch is familiar, but the hardware details still matter. Local AI sounds great when the demo is on stage. The product is whether these machines ship with clear specs, clear pricing and a reason to exist beyond a keynote slide.

For Microsoft, this is also a test of whether Windows still has leverage as a platform, or whether it is becoming just another layer in somebody else’s compute roadmap. If the company wants local AI to be the next chapter of the PC, it will need to show more than branding and a roster of executives. It needs a machine people can actually buy.
