Anthropic bundles Claude into a single assistant, and the compute bill may follow

Anthropic is merging Claude Chat and Cowork into one interface while adding Docs, Slides and wider Design access. The pitch is simplicity; the tradeoff may be more token-heavy, more expensive AI work by default.

Anthropic is merging its chat and agentic tools into a single assistant, folding Claude Chat and Claude Cowork into one interface starting Wednesday.

The company is also rolling out two beta products, Claude Docs and Claude Slides, while expanding Claude Design so it is available inside every conversation rather than as a standalone product. Users on Pro and Max plans will get the update first on web, desktop and mobile, with Team and Free plans to follow.

The goal is to make Claude feel less like a bundle of tabs and more like a single front end that can route work where it needs to go. Anthropic said customers often struggled to choose the right tab for the right task, and the new setup removes the need to decide upfront whether something belongs in Chat or Cowork.

The new Docs feature lets multiple colleagues collaborate on a document in real time, with Claude drafting sections and commenting alongside human editors. Exports to Google Docs and Microsoft Word are supported at launch. Slides can be drafted, edited and presented directly from Claude, or downloaded as PowerPoint or PDF files.

TechCrunch said the unified interface also brings chat, Cowork and Artifacts into one window. Engadget described Cowork as a mode that uses agentic AIs to accomplish multi-step tasks, including reading work documents and creating documents, slides and spreadsheets.

Anthropic says users will still control how autonomously Claude works. By default, Claude will ask before taking an action, though users can let it keep working and check in only when something needs closer review. Enterprise administrators can decide when to enable the beta Docs, Slides and Design features for their organizations.

There is a business logic here, and it is not subtle. A single interface keeps users inside one product longer, gives Anthropic a more direct relationship with them and makes it easier to bundle premium capabilities into a subscription. It is also an enterprise pitch: businesses want to centralize and control employees' AI use, and one Claude is easier to govern than three separate tools.

Here's the thing. The cleaner UI may not be the cheaper one. Fortune noted that agentic products like Cowork tend to consume more tokens than a simple chat exchange, and token usage is how AI companies bill. That matters if ordinary questions get routed through more tool-calling machinery by default.

If Anthropic can keep the assistant useful without turning every prompt into a compute-hungry workflow, this looks like platform simplification. If not, it is just another way to hide complexity behind a nicer interface while the metering quietly runs in the background.
